Netflix Announces New Shows Based on Dr. Seuss Books

Building on a partnership started in 2019, Netflix and the Dr. Seuss estate announced Tuesday that they were creating five new animated series and specials for preschoolers based on the work of the famed children’s author.

The shows include “Horton Hears a Who!,” “The Sneetches,” “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” “Wacky Wednesday” and “Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose.” The screenwriter and producer Dustin Ferrer (the creator of “Esme & Roy”) will be the showrunner for all of them.

“One Fish, Two Fish,” “Wacky Wednesday” and “Horton Hears a Who!” will be series of various lengths. “The Sneetches” and “Thidwick” will both be 45-minute specials. The streaming service did not announce release dates for the shows.

Netflix hopes the collection of Dr. Seuss shows will serve as an anchor for the service as it expands more aggressively into the preschool space. Netflix said it has had strong viewership for other preschool content, like “Cocomelon,” which began as a YouTube channel; “Gabby’s Dollhouse” from DreamWorks Animation; and “Sharkdog,” created by the Singaporean artist Jacinth Tan Yi Ting.

The first collaboration between the Seuss estate and Netflix came in 2019, with the creation of the animated series “Green Eggs and Ham.” The second season of that series will become available on April 8.

“We are always looking for new and engaging ways to share our stories, characters and messages with the next generation of fans, and Netflix has a unique ability to create original, delightful adaptations of our timeless classics with an emphasis on imagination, fun, and education,” Susan Brandt, the president and chief executive of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, said in a statement.
