Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet Telephony

Voice over IP is becoming a very “hot” topic at the moment. VoIP has been around for many years. The author first came across it in 1995 when it was being talked about as a way to reduce cost. Competition has achieved that, at least in UK, with companies providing very cheap retail minutes, so why buy VoIP ?

First some definitions. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology and this technology is used to make calls over the public Internet hence Internet Telephony. These companies provide free calls between their customers over the Internet but charge for calls that are terminated on the public telephone network. Quality is, in our experience, variable. One moment the calls are excellent another time unusable, this is due to the unpredicable nature of the performance of the public Internet.

If you have multiple branch offices which make large numbers of inter-office calls then using VoIP with leased lines can provide a very cost effective solution (note in this case the quality of the network is a factor under your control). However the current generation of VoIP boxes provide significant features and benefits even for the small (5 user) business.

Rosemount Technology has chosen to re-sell equipment made by Zultys Technology who are based in the US and with their UK office and European HQ in Wokingham. The Zultys Technology MX250 Media switch is an excellent example of good engineering and borrows from both the voice and data communications worlds. It is well engineered and integrates IP telephones and desktop computers seamlessly. It links into applications that use TAPI (Telephony Application Programming Interface) under Microsoft’s Windows. For example if you use ACT (contact management software) then your caller’s record will be shown when you receive a call along with any notes etc. that you have made in ACT about the caller. Voicemail and Auto Attendant come as standard and setup/administration is very straightforward if you wish to do it yourself or we can administer the system for you. It is very easy to set up least cost routing for example routing calls out over network and to block access to premium rate numbers.

If you are considering changing your PBX or buying a VoIP switch then please contact us to discuss your requirements and we can demonstrate some of the benefits of VoIP in general and the MX250 in particular.
